The word Tabakoshi Bengali তাবাকোশী Hindi/Nepali तांबाकोसी was first coined by Sri Late Subash Ghishing former leader of Darjeeling Gorkha Hill council chairman which derives from two Nepali words (तांबा) Taba meaning Copper which is a brown red metal and Nepali (कोसी ) Koshi meaning River. Tabakoshi derives from two Nepali words Taba and Koshi. Nepali (तांबा) Taba meaning Copper which is a brown red metal and Nepali (कोसी ) Koshi meaning River. Therefore the place Tabakoshi got its name from the River that flows across the place due to its copper brown color.
Tabakoshi as a tourist destination was the brain child of Sri Late Subash Ghishing of which he laid the foundation stones in 1989. He constructed roads connecting Tabakoshi with Mirik and even electrification of the region began under Ghishing’s chairmanship of the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC). During this period he also constructed a Park (Tabakoshi Park) an iron bridge across the River Rangbang and two beautiful Temples lord Shiva Temple and Vishnu temple in Tabakoshi.

By Air: The nearest airport to Mirik is Bagdogra Airport, which is located about 55 kilometers away. You can book a pickup taxi from the airport to reach the Homestay. The pickup and cabs can be arranged by the homestay on prior notice.
By Train: The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri Station, which is located about 55 kilometers away.
By road: Tabakoshi is approximately 40 kilometers away from Darjeeling, and the most convenient way to reach there is by hiring a taxi or a private car. You can also take a shared jeep or a bus from Darjeeling to Mirik, which is the nearest town to Tabakoshi. From Mirik, you can take a taxi to reach Tabakoshi.
